Unix script to check oracle database

I need to write a Unix script to check whether the oracle database is up running. Any help is appreciated.

Apologize for that. I only realized there was a Unix Script forum after I posted the first message, and I thought the Unix Script forum will be more suitable forum for me to post this question. I did not mean to irritate anyone!!
