do you know of any utilities which will allow me to clone a hard drive?

You'll need to be more specific on what is being cloned. What platform? What type of data (boot or data disk). What is the end purpose of cloning the drive.
Probably the easiest way, is to set up mirroring, mirror the drive, and then break the mirror. At the point of the "breaking" of the mirror, you would have a cloned drive.

Hi,
Just remember to use DD to get a GOOD copy the 2 disks must be solely dedicated to the 'dd'. If a user tries to write to the source disk during the 'dd' the 'dd' may pick up the modifcation or not depending on what sector the copy is up to.

Therefore it is very difficult to 'dd' the root disk.

however if you remove the root disk take it to a different system and mount it as a secondary disk along with the blank disk you want to clone 'dd' can work just fine.
