I am running a cluster server on Unix Sun Solaris. I have this error in my error log:

Jan 7 10:32:50 mallog1 /usr/lib/snmp/snmpdx: [ID 455269 daemon.error] community
_check();bad community from 172.17.7.118

Jan 7 10:32:50 mallog1 /usr/lib/snmp/snmpdx: [ID 716620 daemon.error] session_o
pen() failed for a pdu received from 172.17.7.118.1531

What does this error mean and how do I rectify it?
If the cause is unknown, what are the steps I should take to determine the cause of the problem?
Thanks in advance!

I would say the first step is to find out what that IP address is (on your internal network?), who owns it and why it's making SNMP queries of your system.

SNMP allows remote hosts to query system and performance information. It's usually used by monitoring tools. Annihilannic.

I have done some checking. It seems the SNMP services has been enabled on the server and it is assigned to an invalid community. How do I disable the SNMP service.

SNMP is enabled by default.

You can disable it by renaming /etc/snmp/conf/snmpdx.rsrc to something else. Tun /etc/init.d/init.snmpdx stop to stop the running daemon. Annihilannic.
