Hi all,
in my company i'm managing 2 machines that are Unix based,
but i'm only able to work on the the application that is installed on those machines.
Can someone tell me if there is a good book that explains how to use Unix commands so that i can study on it and then try to use the commands ( i will do that not on my production machines but on a linux test machine) ?

Thanks

O'Reilly's 'Unix in a nutshell' provides a good overview of commands and their purpose. I'd also recommend searching for Unix tutorials using Google - there's plenty of them out there! Cheers.

Unix Unleashed is a rather fat but good book to get overviews of UNIX commands.

Oreilly books IMO are the best resources to purchase and another good resource is the Unix Rossetta Stone (search google for it, the URL escapes me)

If you want to learn what a sys admin does, read the following

"Essential System Administration" ISBN 1-56592-127-5
"Unix Shell Programming" ISBN 0-672-48448-X
"Vi Editor Pocket reference" ISBN 1-56592-497-5
"Sed & Awk" ISBN 1-56592-225-5
"Unix Backup & Recovery" ISBN 1-56592-642-0

All 5 of the above helped me no end in the beginning and are still a useful reference when I get memory loss (Which happens quite often)

Hi definityman,

What flavor of Linux are u using ? You can do a search on the net for the specific Linux used in your system.

In the meantime, you might want to check out these sites :

First, thanks to all for your suggestion.
Second, i need a book for learning Unix commands, how to use them but the main thing for me is to understand how Unix thinks.
I think that man cannot admionistrate a system well unless he understands how the system thinks.

The machine i'm managing are Sco Unix 2.1.2 ( yeah, i know that this version was made when the world was just created)
