dont know if this is the right forum to post this question. but anyway here goes....
I am about to purchase a powerbook in australia, and i will probably be moving to the USA next year. Are the powerbooks universal, i.e will i have to change modem cards to be able to use it in the states, and is there anything else that won't work in the states that works in Australia. Is it worth buying one or is it going to cost to much in the long run to make it compatible in the USA
Thanks for you advice!!

I can't see there being to many problems, have a mate who has just come back from OZ returning to the UK. He has no problems.

If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

Since you are going from one side of the equator to the other, the only difference you will see is that the spinning/wait cursor will rotate in the opposite direction.

The Mac should be fine.

If you are truly worried about a possible difference, consider this: The Mac you might buy in the USA in a year will be much better than the Mac you buy in Australia today.

lol Jimboblack. Indeed, spining cursor in the other direction.

Modems are governed by standards, defined by the ITU. v.90, etc. You'll be fine. YOu may have "English Internation" version of your operating system installed, which really shouldn't be a problem, all else fails reformatting and installing "English North American" version would fix any small issues, which you'd probably only notice when updating software, as software update might try and grab north american versions since you're IP address would be seen as that.
Best of luck,
PT
