having spent a lot of time trying to rescue my new dell laptop a boot mgr that would cope with multiple os would be a big time saver.

the most troublesome scenario was a non bootable disk, due to the awful direct media function messing up the boot function.

the usual xp techniques failed ie fixboot, fixmbr,
rebuild, copy ntldr, ntdetect etc. installing vista did succeed.

a boot mgr that would cope with xp, vista, linux etc. operating from disk or cd for backup would cover most issues.

i have tried gag before but was not impressed.

any suggestions?

Not really a Linux man but have dabbled, I have never had a problem with the Linux Grub boot manager as far as booting either Linux or XP, never used it with Vista though.

May be worth a look.

hi geirendre, adrian thanks for refs.

i do use grub, i use pclinuxos in dual boot with xp on
2 pc, i like it because it gives the user control on boot options, without an edit like say ubuntu. i tried pclinuxos
to recover from non bootable problem, it installed but
could not write the bootloader, hence vista route.

am looking at ultimatebootcd (again) and justlinux is a nice reference site. since users like me only do this sort of thing
every blue moon i want a robust menu driven set of options for system recovery & maintenance. vista wre is a bit naff,
but i have used the full system recovery backup option.
(nb backing up reminded me of dos/w95).

will keep digging and if i find what i think need,
will report back.

Using Vista's Boot Manager to Boot Linux

This is a handy program to use when having Boot problems in Vista dual booting with XP. It can be run from XP and may correct the booting problem.
