I have a new user who is being assigned an existing phone extension and voice mail. How do I change the alias name in unity?

you can't. you will have to delete and recreate the user.

You can also rename the domain account using the "Active Directory Users and Computers" tool. Once renamed within the domain, Unity picks up on this and will update the Alias field automatically.

I haven't timed it, but it's usually pretty quick. I do it all the time during the day and have yet to get a complaint from an end user that can't log in while Unity is updating. So far it appears pretty harmless.

Pull up the AD account and click on the Exchange tabs. The Exchange name might still be under the old name and needs to be updated as well. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

Yes, pull up the AD account for the mailbox you are trying to update the alias on using the "Active Directory Users and Computers" tool. Instead of just renaming the account, pull up the properties. There should be a few Exchange tabs, one of which is the Exchange Alias that I believe you still need to rename.
