Is the extended absence greeting (where no one can leave messages) available in Unity Connection? If so, where is that enabled? Or is it automatically enabled?

YES!

Except it's called your "Alternate" greeting.

To get to it, go into your mailbox, then press 4 - 1 - 2

For some reason, users can still leave messages when those options are used. Is there something missing? (other than my sanity).

From your reference made to "Extended Absence Greeting I gather you're a former Octel user. (Nice system).

To answer your question, you can indeed block the leaving of a message. Go into the Greetings submenu and select the Alternate greeting. Scroll down to the "After Greeting" section and change the dropdown from "take message" to "hang up"

By the way, you do this from the Administrator page, and it does not matter whether the Alternate Greeting is enabled or not. I'm pretty sure the after greeting preference will still stick.

The end user may also be able to change this, though I'm unsure. If they are, they'd likely have to do it throught the PCA gui interface. I'll research that and see what I can find.

Further follow-up....

I checked the documentation as well as logged into my own PCA account. From this it does not appear that the end user is able to change the "After Greeting" functionality themselves. This capability looks to be reserved for the system administrator. Ergo it's yet another step in the setup of new users. This might be configurable as a template that you can build and then use for future new users and/or maybe even with the batch tool. (unsure of this, but seems logical)

Note well that template changes apply only to users added after the creation of, or change to the template. Changes are not retro-actively applied to existing users.

Excellent, thank you. I thought there had to be a check box or option somewhere.

For reasons unknown, a lot of options are hidden or otherwise not immediately obvious. Another example of this is the individual end-user's outcall notification schedule - it's there in the "Edit Notification Device" screen (for each device) but you have to be observant and notice the little "Edit notification device details" GO button in the "related links" area of the screen (top right-hand side) - as a new user you will probably come looking for this someday.

Though I very sorely miss the convenience of Octel's Transfer Mailbox and the Conditional Transfer Mailbox I have managed, mostly through trial and error, to find workarounds.

If you're going to be administering this thing, I can personally recommend a publication from Cisco Press written by David Schulz entitled simply "Cisco Unity Connection". It's roughly 600 pages of well-written knowledge about complete setup and full administration. Approx $45 from Amazon. I find it takes a lot of the cryptic ambiguity out of Cisco's own documentation. There's also a Kindle edition for $29, but personally I like having hard copy for my reference manuals. Old school I guess :)
