Uniqueness database file and computer names

when deploying xp on more than one computer using an answer file how does the installation know which computer name to install on a particular computer. I understand how this is entered in the answer file but my question is how is the computer identified during installation. For example if I add 3 computer names..Bob1 Bob2 Bob3, when I insert the installation cd how does the installation know which computer to install as bob1 or bob2 ....do the computer have to be prestaged?

Pretty sure it has something to do with the hardware mac address, ie you would have to already know what the mac address of each machine is as well as populating that in your file.
