Unique Auto# setup (one) table but will change by month

I have set up an autonumber with a unique number, This will be designed according to how we have our work orders numbers set up. I want to be able to go and change 2 or 3 numbers of this unique auto# as we track our work orders with the month number included in it...
Is there a way to keep all of the previous numbers entered in my table from previous months, and at the same time change the autonumber format for the month coming up and keep everything all in one table. Or will I have to create a table for each month?

It would help to see an example of what you want the number to look like. If you want AutoNumber to start a 1 each Month then you would have to use a new table each month which I personally think would be disasterous. Some folks think AutoNumber should be banned in all 50 states. I personally think it works very well in a Work Order system. But in ours, we just use AutoNumber without any additional values.
