You say it is in the configuration files at start up. What configuration files?
You can look at the autoexec.bat and/or the config.sys for any Norton AV addition and remove it.
From the ms-dos prompt, type:
edit c:\autoexec.bat
and after deleting the lines you want to, do:
alt-File-save
alt-File-exit
Do the same for config.sys
You can also download Regcleaner from the net. It is freeware and allows you to remove applications from startup that stay there after uninstalling the software.
