What is the best way to uninstall sendmail and install qmail?

I already installed qmail. When I tried to unintall sendmail, it wouldn't let me:

error: removing these packages would break dependencies:
smtpdaemon is needed by fetchmail-5.5.0-2
smtpdaemon is needed by mutt-1.2.5i-3

How do I go about switching over from this point?

Thanks.

If you are using rpm from the command line you can use -e to uninstall a package and also use --nodeps to prevent dependency checking. For more detailed info, I would read `man rpm' .

What becomes of Fetchmail and Mutt then? Is this going to affect anything else?

Does qmail need anything else or does it have everything bundled with it?

Thanks again.

Hi,

This is not much to do with apache but never mind......

Qmail is a smtp server and, as such, is directly comparable to sendmail. Mutt is just a text-mode email client that you should know if you are using! The problem could be fetchmail, depending on whether you are using it at the moment or not. See --> .

Actually, 'logically' you shouldn't be getting these errors because qmail 'provides' smtpdaemon itself, i.e. either sendmail or qmail should satisfy the dependency need of those packages for 'smtpdaemon'. However, there seem to be few pre-built rpms of qmail due to license issues so I guess you wouldn't have installed it that way - hence the dependency problem. What you have to do is download the source rpm ( and build/install the binary from there with :

rpm --rebuild qmail-1.03-102memphis.src.rpm

Hope this helps...

Sorry, this post shouldn't have gone here. My bad.

Thanks for your help.
