Hello,
I have really goofed up my mysql install on my linux box and I am trying to find something about how to uninstall mysql from a source install (.tar.gz). I did not use the rpms and now I'm afraid I'm stuck. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Did you do a "make install"? There is a "make uninstall" if I am not mistaken.

Just clean up as best you can and install the rpms over everything.

I just tried the make uninstall and it didn't work. Thank you all for helping. I'm going to try what ericbrunson mention and hope it all goes well from there. Thank you!

Did the make install in the /usr tree or the /usr/local? If it's in the /usr/local you can just rm -rf, if it's in the /usr then the rpm will overwrite everything important.

The make install is in the /usr/local/src/mysql-standard-4.1.7-pc-linux-i686 directory. I'll try that and let you know if I get it working. Thank you again!
