The network admin before myself purchased a server, installed Digital Unix, and was subsequently fired. I need to find out how to uninstall this operating system from this server. It is set to boot from hard disk ONLY and is password protected so I cannot enter the system.

I don't know a whole lot (nothing) about Unix. Is there a way to configure the boot order, such as in Windows, so I can boot from a floppy and fdisk? To the point, how do I remove Unix in this scenario?

Thanks,
Mick

What sort of machine is it ? Ian

Compaq XP1000 and I believe it's an Alpha machine.

OK, I don't know the boot process/boot prompt stuff on Alphas. The only thing that I do know is that the alpha version of windoze is on the standard installation disk set/CD set.

Sorry, I can't be of more help. Ian

Mich -- there's a DEC forum here on tek-tips, have you asked there? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

if you ever need to boot a different order, to run configuration utilities (and bios cracks to get into a passworded bios ...) you can always physically unplug the default boot device from inside the machine.

that way it definately can't boot to it :)
