Yikes! I dodged a bullet. I wiped out my Windows 2000 root level files (boot.ini, config.sys, etc...) So I had to do another Windows 2000 install. I put the new install into a directory I called "Win2000". My original install directory, "WinNT", remained intact. After rebooting, I changed my boot.ini file to point to my old WinNT directory and my system was restored. (I thought I was in for days of reconfiguring a new system to match my old one - whew!!)

My questions are:
1. Are there any ramifications from the 2nd install?

2. Can I now delete the "Win2000" directory and
the newly created directories in the "Documents and Settings" directory? What is the best way to approach this problem & how can I guard against it in the future.?

Thanks - asp1233
Advice is much appreciated

I think the old windows will stop working if u delete the 2nd installation ,, because a lot of registry links may be linked to the new windows now !

You shouldn't install a new windows ,, But u may had to repair the old one first , and if u fail , u may install the new windows on te old one. Mohamed Farid

The old should continue working if you delete \win2000 (as all that was wrong with old was missing boot sector). Both winnt & win2000 folders contain all their own registry files (they're independent installations, you could in fact have a dual boot to either if you wish).

In Documents and Settings folder, you'll need an Adminstrator, All Users and Default User folder (and any Users you set up under the old installation).

Future safeguard. Make a 2k boot floppy. Put ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini on a newly formatted floppy. This will boot your 2k installation even if boot sector files missing. In the event of a problem, you could then copy said files back to hard drive from floppy. You may need to use 2k's recovery console (fixboot command - see Help in win2k if you don't know about this) to get system to boot from hard drive again (without reinstall).
