Unhandled Exception error when starting Eudora

I have been using Eudora v.6.1.2.0 and previous versions for several years but , due to continuing " unhandled exception " errors which have rendered Eudora unusable , I have been forced to return to Outlook Express.

I have XP Pro SP1 and use AVG a/v with ZA firewall.

I have read the posts in the Eudora NG on this error and seem unable to find a solution to this annoying problem . In particular I could find no references to any " tmks*.exe " files on my PC as suggested in a recent post on this NG as a possible virus nor does deleting the Folder EUDPRIV resolve this problem

Here are the initial part of the last 3 error reports written to my Exception.log. ( the rest of these reprts usually consist of a series of digits which are meaningless and take up too much space to reproduce here .The last report was interrupted by myself when it reached 15000 KB's in size !!

I note that the last two errors mention the file "mfc42.dll" but others have not mentioned this.

Is this significant in finding what is causing this ?

Finally , each time these errors occur there is a message from Eudora asking whether I want to send an Error Report to Microsoft.

On many occasions I have done this , more in hope than in anger .

Is it recommended that this should be done ? It has not seemed to produce any return action by Microsoft any time I've done it .

I have been having unhandled exception errors since Norton Antivirus found a virus in incoming e-mail and apparently "locked" the in.mbx file. When Eudora (6.1) starts it immediately gives error #13 stating that the file is "read only" or "locked". I then get the unhandled exception message and Eudora shuts down. OS is XP Pro. I need access to this mbx but can't figure out how to repair it. Any assistance greatly appreciated!

The only solution I can offer to solve this "UNHANDLED EXCEPTION " error is what I did which was to restore a previously restored Drive Image file of the offending partition, fortunately ,recorded before I experienced this problem.
Previous to this I tried to "roll back " XP to a previous Restore Point which did not work. Whether this was due to the fact that the Restore Point was not sufficiently far back I cannot say other than to say that my " roll-back " in this instance did not work .

I'm convinced that there is a serious problem in Eudora with this " unhandled exception " error and that this is being ignored by Qualcomm . I suspect it is being triggered by some corruption in the Adds associatd with this APP.

What the solution will be I have no idea !

It actually sounds more like the version of MFC42.DLL is either corrupted or different from the original. You could try running "sfc" to check if the base XP files are the correct ones. My MFC42.dll is version 6.0.8665.0 having a size of 972 KB (995,383 bytes). I haven't experienced a single exception with Eudora on XP pro. Hope this helps!

i have seen this a few times does this error occur when you try to recieve mail ? when I recieved this error this was the case, my resolution was to open eudora and then before sending or recieving mail to delete the last couple of messages in the inbox... I presume there was a corrupt email message as this process has always worked for me.
