Ungroup command doesn't ungroup all lines of text

I'm working with a file that started in MS word, was imported into inDesign and saved as an outline in eps format, then imported into illustrator. I need to measure the size of certain individual letters in the file, which I usually do by ungrouping the whole text, selecting a line and releasing the compound path, then selecting the individual letter. For some reason, in this instance the ungroup command leaves several lines still linked, and the release compound path command doesn't allow me to select individual letters. Any suggestions?

The grouping may be several levels deep, you may have to ungroup more than once.

Also, if you're not selecting the whole group, ungrouping can be an issue.

Also, you may need to remove effects that may be applied on the group level before you can release.

With the Direct Selection Tool you don't need to ungroup in order to select specific elements.

Some clumsy workarounds that may work for ungrouping:

1. Write an action, based on the concept that when you group-select (white arrow with +) one element from a group, then cut it, it is extracted from the group. Then, if you paste in front, you'll have a loose object. Repeat.

or

2. Select all, and apply Add-to-Shape (holding the alt key while doing this expands the effect immediately) from the Pathfinder palette (NOT from the effect menu). Now, you have one big compound path, that can be ungrouped into its composing elements. Compounding destroys most old relationships that any of the elements used to have.

It just occurred to me, make sure you don't have anything locked that could be in your groups...

PS let me know if any of that works, otherwise we'll come up with some more ways.
