hi
i am running a 486DX4 100mhz with 16mb of ram. It uses win 95 and whenever i try to connect to ANY isp my modem dials normally but when it trys to verify my user n password it cuts me off with the message "unable to establish connection" i have recently wiped the HDD and installed win95 instead of the old win 3.11. Could there be a missing component i have not installed or could it be my tc/ip settings (they are set to atomatically know the settings) PLEASE HELP!

Have you tried having the ISP help you hookup? (alright, ANY ISP)
MOST of them can get that done, coz they want your bidness.

Try this:

John is right, the ISP will help you all they can, but if they say it's your problem and you know you have the right user id and password (servers are case sensitive, so make sure you have lower case or uppercase depending on what your ISP requires) in your dialer and the ISP has the same thing on their server, try some of these and let me know if any works.

When the dialer comes up, click on the properties button. Make sure if you have call waiting it is checkmarked and the proper number to disable it is in the white box. If you don't have call waiting and it is checkmarked, take the checkmark out. Make sure your phone is set right for pulse or tone. Try it again, if that doesn't work, (you may have to reboot to get these settings to take affect, I don't remember) then go to the next option below.

Right click on your My Computer icon, go to device manager, click on modem, double click on your modem showing. Check out which comport your modem is using and see if there are any conflicts. If there are, you probably will have to go to CMOS on startup and disable the comport your modem is trying to use.

If that doesn't work, go back and re-enable your comport in CMOS. Go to CONTROL PANEL, double click on modems, try out the diagnostics>click on MORE INFO button for the comport your modem is showing in and see if it reads OK. If it does your modem is OK, it is probably your ISP's problem.

If that doesn't work, go the START>HELP>HARDWARE TROUBLESHOOTER and go through the steps.

I hope something here helps, but if not, I'm sure someone on here has the answer.

Good Luck,

I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

Go through the above steps to make sure the OS is talking to your modem OK. If it is, and your modem is internal, go to "Control Panel/Network/Win Config" and disable "Wins Resolution". You will have to reboot to take effect.
Also, does your ISP use DNS? If you have incorrect settings there, you would get described result.
Hope this helps
