It seems that I am revisiting the idea of unembedding photos in Adobe Illustrator. Currently there are two reasons for this:

1) A printer that I am sending a project to has requested that files be sent with the images unembedded.

2) The file size has bloated significantly and saving takes forever.

Every time I have to execute routine changes during the course of producing a project I have to save. And if I am a diligent computer user I will be saving my work often. How often have we heard that suggestion. But, I am often frustrated by the fact that it actually takes longer to save a document than it does to make the change.

Is there a way to unembed existing photos?

Also, is there a way to link to images and have them show up in the links pallet to later be embedded when I am ready to send files abroad?

The answer to your last question is found in the flyout menu of the Links palette. There's an item called "Embed Image", and it's active as long as the image is only linked. Once embedded, the option is grayed out.

To "unembed" an image, your best choice will be to put crops (Object>Crop Area>Make) around the image, go to "Export" or "Save for Web", and save it as the raster image of your choice (make sure to use appropriate resolution and compression settings), then delete the embedded image and place the saved image as a link.

When import the image with the linked box checked I cannot see the image listed in the links pallet.

Make sure you have "Show All" checked in the flyout:

Got it. Thanks. But, honestly Adobe should work on allowing you to unembed images. Saving files with embedded images takes way too long. I see the advantage of saving them for output purposes, but of all the times I save my document I will only save it for output once. When I am ready to save for output I could choose to embed them then.

hi,

just to add, it is possible to relink embedded files from the flyout menu, using cs2 you can choose from the flyout menu to relink the image you just embedded:

make sure the link option is checked in the following dialogue, search for the image to re-import, image now linked.

best of luck!
