Undo does NOT work

We have CS3 on a Mac G5 and the undo command frequently does not work. Using either the quick command or going up to the menu, doesn't work. In the menu it's all grayed out. Before a save after a save, doesn't work. Move something to the right, can't undo? Sometimes after restarting InDesign or rebooting the computer, it might be available.
Any help please.

Reset the preferences.
