Underwhelming boss

I am working for someone who, maybe for professional reasons, refuses to give me any real responsibility regardless of expertise or previous experience. I'm a developer and systems analyst. Recently, I developed a system and controls that have saved our company a significant amount of money that has given me a boost in some people's minds. However, my boss has reduced my role. In the past month, he has given about half my responsibilities to others and has snubbed me in not asking me to be part of a new project that involves my greatest expertise. I am happy with my job, the people I work with and my position in the company AND I am not out for this guy's job. I don't want to quit, but I feel that I am being marginalized in the department as a result of past successes that had my stamp on them rather than my boss' I would much prefer to "right" the situation. Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Maybe you should try talking to your boss and find out why he's acting this way. Make it clear you're not interested in his job, you just want to be challenged and you want to contribute to the success of the company. And that by doing a great job, as you have been, you make him look good.

If that doesn't work, talk to his boss.
 
This is your boss' way of telling you he doesn't like you...wants to irritate you...ignore your expertise...and force you to leave.
 
Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. Whatever happens, I'm sure the situation will be resolved in a couple of months.
 
I _had_ a boss like this. Decided I worked for the company, not for the boss. Did what was best, ignored the boss. Was asked to make minor changes to old software (which was on the brink of falling apart). Refactored and rewrote the entire application from scratch in about the same time frame they estimated the changes to be. Finally the boss had to "reduce headcount", and so out I went. Problem solved.

Sometimes "best outcome" is not the same as "easiest".
