Once you have these foundations, you'll need to find out exactly what you want to know. Call manager is a specific device, is this what you want or a broader spectrum?
I'd personally look at understanding the SIP protocol next and seeing how this works, as this is an open standard and very widely used.
And then get yourself a little lab. This can be done for free belive it or not.
Get some soft phones (e.g SJLabs or X-Lite)
A SIP Server, e.g OnDo server
and your away. Then you can add hardware devices when you get the hang of it.
Avoid the likes of Skype, unless that's what you want to be a specialist in as it's propriaty software.
