Understanding Mac fonts

I'm trying to gain an understanding of the OSX font system and Adobe fonts with Suitcase for supporting these systems.
Is it correct that all fonts whether they be Adobe or Mac that each font has 2 files, a main font file for printing and a bitmap font for screen preview?
If so can someone explain the file structure of this?

Can someone pint to a site that discribes these things?

OSX can handle any fonts now, even self-contained (single file) TTF and OTF fonts.
