Hi there,

We recently bought a new IBM i-Series server running OS/400 and DB2.

I am a Oracle and SQL Server DBA, now I have NO clue on what is going on on this new server of ours.

Does anyone know of any good web sites where one can get an understanding on how OS400/DB2 actually works? Are there any good tools available to monitor the database i.e. Oracle's OEM, Toad etc etc. As I understand the OS and DB is very much integrated?

Any help/info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
J.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Will definitely have a look at the manuals.

Yes, database and operating system is much more one than with real relational databases. We have both AS400 as well as ORACLE,SQL server , DB2 UDB.

You can do a lot of stuff from within the system itself, but OS400 is more a sophisticated filesystem with some relational characteristics than a real relational database.

Data is stored in libraries in physicals (tables) with logicals (views) based on them.

managing is performed mostly with command line, though there are probably aftermarket tools to buy.

SQL is slightly less evolved compared to the latest relational databases, but IBM is working on that....

I'd say that some formal training is absolutely essential, cause it is a whole new game!
