I'm looking for war stories about/advice concerning/experiences with some of the third-party packages that purport to provide undelete functionality to SPS2003 (you know, the functionality that went away with the demise of the Undelete Web Part in 2001). We're about to undertake a massive migration from file-based to portal-based document management, and undelete/recovery of individual documents (NOT entire libraries or SQL databases) is a must-have. I need some pros/cons about these packages, specifically

and

TIA for your time, experience, and expertise.

Hello,

I have evaluated the solution from Avepoint. They now have to separate products one is ITEM level backup an the other is SITE level backup. I tested the ITEM level version. I think that this product works good and it is easy to use and configure. Although the pricing might be one of the downsides of this product.

When I did the evaluation of this product I only used SharePoint Services. I setup the solution in a very short period of time and in about 20min I had a working backup solution. I then started "breaking" my sites, deleting documents, itmes in lists etc. and then restored it back. It worked perfectly.

I think that the Graphical interface of DocAve could have been a bit better, but as long as the software does what it is supposed to do that is of less importance.

Have you checked out the PowerUndelete (or now named PowerRecycle) that will be available 30th of Novemeber? You can find it at

If you are ONLY interested in recovering individual documents you might want to look at the PowerRecycle (PowerUndelete) software.

Using the ITEM level backup in large environments with lots of sites, might have a high impact on the system.

I have not tested the other solution you mentioned, maybe someone else have.

Regards,
Thomas

Hey Thomas,

I just got done with the Doc Ave evaluation, and agree with you. The UI needs some work, but it does the job admirably.

Power Recycle is STILL not available as of this writing. The Web page verbiage was reworked to say "Released from Development on November 30th".

OK.
