Hi all,

I have Sony PCG-Z505RX laptop. It has a cd drive PCGA-CD5.
This drive is able to read only CD-R disks. Whenvever I use CD-RW it says device not ready.

Any idea where could be the problem, and its solution ??

Thanks in advance

Assuming that the discs are good, your drive is most likely failing (Although some drives just flat have issues with certain brand discs...might try it). I have seen several RW drives partially die like that. Most of them continue to work fine with CD-Rs for quite some time.

It also depends on which software you used to make the disk. For instance, if you use Direct Cd, you have to install a UDF reader to get the CD-ROM to read it. I think Nero's drag and drop program has the same problem. If you use Easy CD Creator or Regular Nero and create a CD the normal way (Make a Data CD that can be read in most CD players) then it should work. The CD-ROM has to be a multi-read CD-ROM also. Old CD-ROM drives sometimes won't work. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Very good point, Nobrain! I am going off of the assumption that the discs were being used from start to finish utilizing the same software, and I hadn't even thought of that!

I had also assumed that the drive was a CDRW drive...however, now that I did a quick search on the model, it does not seem to be a burner. Sooooooo

Ambatim----if this drive is not a burner, then it is NOT failing...just does not want to read RW discs. *VERY* common for old drives (especially for a slower speed drive, and it appears that yours is 16X...definitely a bit older).

Sorry for the bad post earlier. I suppose that I should have looked into it a little bit first!
