Regular updates work O.K. But I have three "Optional" updates that do nothing!
KB3000850
KB3013769
KB3013816
I have tried the whole group, and one at a time. The field says "Downloading", the green bar goes across, but that is all! Tonight I gave it over a half hour, and the green bar disappeared - but that is all!
8.1 Pro. I don't have Office. Is it that I just don't need any of these particular updates, or is there something wrong?

I had a similar problem with another update, KB32597088. From what I read, some suggestions included disconnecting all USB drives, downloading MS FixIt, and re-install Windows. I did the first two. No way was I going to re-install Windows. The Fixit program didn't seem to find anything but after a reboot, I was able to download and manually install the final patch. In my case, I think the problem was the patch popped up an error message behind the download process. Only after looking carefully at my task bar did I see the error message and respond to it.

BTW, did you check to see if those patches took? On the update screen you can look at your history to see which patches failed or not.

I looked at "Download" history. For the last few months, every "suggested", and "recommended" were marked "succeeded". Every "suggested" was listed as "failed"! That's why I wondered if Windows will reject any unneeded downloads.
I'll try the "fixit".

Went to the M.S. Fix it site. Downloaded the program to fix downloads. Made a "restore point" just to be safe. Closed all programs. Ran the "Fix it" program...

"This trouble shooter does not apply to your system"!!!

Microsoft hasn't updated to Windows 8 yet???

Windows Update should tell you at the time of attempting to download whether an update is required or not.

Can you clarify your last post it doesn't read correctly, or make much sense as it stands?

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Hide Windows 7, or 8, Updates that you do not Ever Want to Install

linney:
When I get notified that there are new D/L's available, I go to Windows Update site. I am shown a box that shows a choice of needed D/L's, and optional D/L's.
When I choose "needed", everything is O.K. Updates are D/L and install just fine. When I click on "optional" D/L's, I get a new page with more D/L's. I select any (or all) of those D/L's, it goes to the "bar" page, and says "Downloading". The "green" indicator moves across the bar area, the readout says 0% downloading, and that's it! It just stay that way! After about ten minutes, the green indicator disappears, but the bar remains, and the 0% downloaded remains.

As for "Fix it". 2ffat suggested the Microsoft "Fix it" site. I went there and chose the "Update problem Fix it" program. Ran it and got the error message that it is not for Windows 8.1!!!

I check the "Installed" list, and it shows "failed" on all "Optional" updates.

If it was a problem with all updates, that would be one thing. But this is only "Optional" updates that I am having problems with. Why just those?

Thanks, but none of those apply to me. I don't have Office, and I got rid of Silverlight long ago. I don't have any problem with security patches - just some optional ones. I don't have any operating problems, just download/install these optional updates.

See what the Windows Update log says about the KB's that are failing.

Have you tried manually downloading these updates and manually installing them in a Clean Boot environment?

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

Well, we can close this one out! By using a program called "What's Running" (an advanced version of "Task Manager"), I found that a program called "TiWorker" ( a part of MS downloads), was causing my CPU to run at 100%! I researched this and found it was a common problem, which Win 8.1 has a built-in fixit! (Search "Troubleshoot").
I did all of that, and installed the two optional D/L's. I still had a 755 meg D/L (KB 30000850). I figured just ignore it, but with every reboot, I would get a pop-up that a "run-once" program was trying to run. It was the "run" program to install the "850" that wouldn't completely D/L!!!
So I finally gave up and left the computer on all night to see what would happen! Well, by morning it WAS installed, and 'reboot computer'! That reboot (working - don't turn off computer), took an hour and a half!
So tonight I'll do a full system backup so I don't have to go through THAT again!
