I have taken over an existing network and attempting to apply service packs to the servers and the systems keep stating 'You do not have permission to update Windows Server 2003. Please contact your system administrator'. This occurs on XP and Server 2003 machines with the domain admin and local admin logons. I can't seem to locate what would be preventing an admin account from performing this update.

I had this problem previously on other Dell XPP workstations and we had to remove them from the domain in order for the SP to apply.

Not sure if it is the problem in this case, but I know that various Microsoft updates give that sort of error if you do not have "Backup Files and Directories" token permission.

I enabled that policy, but that did not resolve it. Thanks though.

Remember that you might have to set it as a group policy and not a local policy if you're connected to a domain.

You might also try putting the Administrator in the Backup Operators group.
