Hi

I am unable to start GUI in Linux Redhat 8.0.I'm getting the following error:-

#startx

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already run
ning

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.

Can anyone help meout on this.

Regards,
RK.

did you run Xconfigurator and chose the right VGA driver also type of monitor ?
You can try generic vga driver and generic monitor lowres.
If the gui can start with standard VGA 640x480.So the problem come from the vga driver.

Is the GUI already running in tty7? Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to switch to tty7. Check the output of "ps -ef" and see if you see any X apps running.

If the GUI really isn't started, then run redhat-config-xfree86 command to configure the GUI. The Xconfigurator command doesn't exist in any version of Red Hat above 7.3.

Don't use startx. try "init 5". Then, change the gui config.I have the same problem in Redhat 9.

All 'init 5' does is switch to runlevel 5, which forces the GUI to start when the computer boots. His problem sounds like the GUI is already running and he's trying to start it again. If his problem is that the GUI is misconfigured, switching to runlevel 5 could lock up the terminal, so don't do that.
