Unable to setup VPN Server/Connection

So I am trying to setup a VPN server with no luck.

My ISP is Comcast, I have a dlink WBR-1310 router connected to my cable modem. I have two home computers on the network. One wired, one wireless. Both through the dlink router.

I want my home computers to be the VPN server and connect to them from work.

FEW QUESTIONS I HAVE...

1) Do I setup the wired home PC as the server?
2) When I connect to the VPN, do I connect to my dedicated public comcast IP?
3) What IP range do I specify under my VPN server IP properties? Is this my public IP or my dlink LAN IP?

When I try to connect I get a Error 800. Unable to connect message. I can ping my public comcast IP just fine. But when I portqry my comcast IP it says port 1723 isn't listening. But when I portary my LAN dlink IP, it says it is. What does that mean?

On my wired VPN server machine I've added a Windows firewall exception for both port 1723 and 47.

I'm totally at a loss here. What do I need to do?

By the way my dlink router is setup as Dynamic IP (DHCP) and I have PPTP Passthrough enabled. Also setup Port forwardering for PPTP, port 1723 traffic TCP. But what IP do I want the port forwarder for? All the options are for the various LAN Ips. Which do I want?

It seems I can't get anything passed my dlink router. Also tried TightVNC and it won't connect. Maybe i'm setting up my dlink port forwarding wrong? No idea....frusterating...

well, you'll need to setup one of the systems to run RRAS so that you can terminate your PPTP sessions. Which ever machine you setup to run the RRAS service is the one you'll want to redirect the ports to. Otherwise you can just run VNC server on one of them and redirect the VNC ports to it/them.

What is PRAS?

I setup VNC and port forwarded ports 5800 and 5900 and still couldn't connect. I am setting up port forwarding within the dlink admin window. Is that the proper procedure?

So if I setup PRAS, I want to setup port forwarding to the LAN IP of that machine? Can you describe this procedure?

i just want to make sure that whichever host you have the router redirecting the ports to is running VNC Server. If yes, and you are still not connecting I would see if the D-Link has a logging feature so that you can see what is going on. If there is no decent logging feature then run a Wireshark on the target host to see if the traffic is hitting it.
