Outlook 2002 running under XP Pro SP2 on a stand alone machine, no Exchange server. This is a reinstallation from HP recovery disks following a fatal hard disk crash. All other office programmes run ok, as does Outlook Express.

When opening Outlook initial message says:-

"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. Could not open the item. Try again."

So I try again, and then get this message:-

"Cannot create the e-mail message because a data file to send and receive messages could not be found. To add a data file, such as a personal folder file, double click the Mail icon in Windows Control Panel."

A backup of the PST file was placed in the appropriate sub-dir, so path statements for the profile all appear to be ok. There is nothing wrong with the PST file as I transfered it to another machine, and it opens up and works fine.

Tried running a repair from the Office CD - no difference. Tried uninstalling then reinstalling the whole Office suite, but still the same problem.

Any clues?

In Tools-Options-Mail Setup - Data Files, is the path to the pst file there?

Or try creating a new personal folder file and point it to the pst file you copied. Then see if it can be opened.

Thanks for replies guys.

Pgaliardo, tried doing that, still same problem.

Smah, I assume no permissions set as "security tab" not there when I right-click on .PST file.

This is beginning to look like a XP Pro/Office 2002 incompatibility problem, as just loaded a fresh installation here of XP Pro SP2, put on Outlook 2002, and have same problem! And yet if I put that very same .PST file into my laptop (XP Pro/Outlook 2003), it works fine...
