Unable to send email attachment

I am having problems with a mailbox. I can connect to my exchange server (Version 5.5 SP3) and can send/receive emails no problem. However, if I want to send an attachment, regardless of the size, Outlook then hangs and doesn't send it.
Does anyone know what the problem is??
