My win2k machine is unable to see the samba share all of a sudden. It gets its IP viz DHCP. Any suggestions.
Thanks.

So many possibilities.

Does it have general connectivity- can you poing the Linux box?

Does Start->Run- \\sambashare work ?

Did you change your Windows group?

Is Samba running?

I had one of these that drove me absolutely crazy- full telnet connectivity, everything set up right, but it kept losing connection to all of Network Neighborhood. Reboot and (sometimes) it would come back, but a few days later it would go away again.

Finally (out of desperation) I changed the nic in the PC and everything started working again. Very, very strange.

Ok,
The problem is that I had not joined this to the samba domain yet. When I try to do that (join the domain) I get "a procedure (too long) error". This happens when I on the win2k box,
network identification -> next ->next ->next ->next -> I enter the username/password (root username and password for chaos) and the domain to join. Then I enter name of comp and domain. Then I enter root/passwd/domain information again.
Then I get the error. Procedure too long.
????????????????????????????????????????
Thanks.

ok, when I try to add this machine to the domain, I get a message,
"error when trying to add this to the domain"
"procedure number out of range"
what the heck is that supposed to mean ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Two questions:
What kind of domain is it trying to join? (i.e.: Windows 2000 Active Directory "Domain", or an NT 4.0 domain)

Did you turn on password encryption in the samba conf file? If not... do it :)

Its joining a NIS/Samba based domain.
I have also set the passwd encryption in smb.conf as such,
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

Also, in lists.samba.org,
I read a few posts that said it could be due to the number of letters of the domainname being odd-numbered. Well, I have successfully added other machines to the domain before.

Thanks.

Is there a account in the linux for the user you tried to log in ? Is there a samba-user and is there a user for the w2k-machine on samba ?

Set up a user on the linux computer as: login-"test" password-"test"

Set up a user on the Windows 2000 computer as: login-"test" password-"test"

On your linux computer, open a shell and type "smbpwd" -without the quotes. This should prompt you for a name. Type in "test" -without quotes and then it'll prompt you for a password. At the password prompt type "test" -without quotes.

You may have to type in the password twice if I remember correctly.

well, the usual set up is that I am not worried about adding users. What I am trying to do (and what I done successfully over and over again) when I try to add a win machine to read shares of the samba is that I type in the root username and password for the samba to add this computer to that domain.
Also, Mirihall, Iam not sure what I am doing by following your instructions. Can you please explain.
Thanks.

If you want to be able to connect and browse through your linux computer then follow my instructions.

The instructions I provides "should" let you browse from your Windows 2000 computer to your linux computer via Samba.

Sorry for the delay Mitrihall,
Will get back with the feedback shortly
Thanks.
