Unable to save Pagemaker file

We have a pagemaker file (PM6.5 / MAC environment 256RAM / file size about 38mb) with a large number of tiff CMYK images which we originally embedded in publication but then converted them to link as the file would not save (it just hung, no errors, but no hardisk activity). Even though we have now "linked" images the file still will not save? still hangs appearing to be saving bu again no disk activity, have to force quit application.

Any suggestions?

One of the best things to do if you have this kind of trouble and after making so many changes is first allocate more memory to pagemaker. Seceondly check the preferences of Pagemaker. File>Preference>general.
In the right bottom of the popup menu you see the options faster and smaller. make sure the smaller button is active. Then in stead of doing a normal "save". Do a "save as". Normally this would change the megabytes of your publication.
