Unable to retrieve Mail with pop3d or uw-imap from remote host?

I have configured qmail as per Dave Sill's `Qmail Handbook`, and smtp seems to work fine. I then configured qmail-pop3d and uw-imap. If I'm on the mail server and telnet to 127.0.0.1 110 OR 127.0.0.1 143 they test fine. But it I try to configure an MUA on a remote host I get `error-unable to connect to server` for imap or pop3. This is the first email server I have configured so forgive my newbieness but any Ideas where I should look for the problem???
