Unable to rename server

We have 2 servers. Server A(2K) and Server B(2K3) in a 2K3 domain. We removed server A from the domain and took it offline. We attempted to rename server B to server A's hostname and the error comes up "A General Network Error Occurred." For that matter we tried to rename Server B to anything else and the same error comes up no matter what name we select. There is the option if removing it from the domain and rejoining at, but at this time our client requires root cause as to why this server will not rename. Any suggestions are appreciated

try tis article below..notice it also says that if your dc 2k was running Microsoft's Certificate Authority services (CA) can never be renamed.
