Hi all

I have a client running a small network and he wants to be able to use Outlook Express through the LAN.

Internet Connection sharing is enabled on the machine with the ADSL modem and Internet access works as expected.

Emails can be sent through Outlook Express on the networked machines, but not received.

The account details for Outlook, (working correctly), on the machine with the ADSL modem are exactly the same as for Outlook Express on the other machines other than the LAN is used.

The error message is as follows:-

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

TIA

If the firewall on the other PC is enabled, you should check if POP3 is enabled in the Advanced Settings.

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all. Please specify details.

Thanks for your reply.

The firewall for each machine is Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0.15.A(221001)

I could not find a reference to POP3 in the advanced settings.

The following is the error message received by Outlook on the same machine:-

'Task 'pop.mail.yahoo.com - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

What I omitted to say is that I'm trying to simulate the client's setup on my personal network, machines running under Win2K, whereas the client's network is running under Windows XP, so this particular firewall, if that is the problem, may not be an issue on the XP network.

Need to be confident that the setup will work under the conditions described.

What you are NOT saying is if the XP firewall is on or not, regardless the other. The XP firewall will by default block POP3, and that is what I was referring to.
If you want to simulate things, you need to simulate them in an identical environment, otherwise you may get false info.

Removing this particular firewall from the machine with the ADSL modem enables both send and receive to both Outlook and Outlook Express.

SP2 is not yet installed on the XP network so what, if any, issues are there with such a setup on an XP network, with or without SP2, assuming the XP firewall to be in use?

Apologies - our posts crossed.

I understand your comments about simulation, but I have no choice other than to attempt what has been described.

Clients don't take kindly to experimenting on site at their expense! [smile]

Assuming POP3 to be anabled in the XP firewall and the firewall to be in use, it sounds as though it should work?

The POP3 must be enabled on the sharing XP Firewall for it to work indeed.
That is what I mean with a wrong simulation.
You would never see that if you test with other Windows version AND another firewall. All you tested then is a theory, but you miss out on the important details, which make the difference between succeeding or failing.
