I'm trying to promote a win2k server to additional server status within a win2k domain. There is only one domain controller and five clients attached to an ADSL firewall/hub. The hub provides dhcp for the clients and the servers obviously have fixed IP's. DNS is enabled on the domain controller and functions well. And the problem? I can't promote the second server using "dcpromo", it refuses to see the domain in fully qualified form or otherwise. It does appear in network neighbourhood and is a member of the domain and has even registered in the foward lookup zone in DNS. Any thoughts?

At my wits end,

Are you trying to promote it to a member server? It is already a member server. You can only promote it to a DC from there. But first you must enable and install AD. James Collins

hi,

So I need to install AD before running DCPROMO?

thanks

Hi,

DCPromo is the active directory installation Wizard. That is
it installs AD and promotes to domain controller.

You did say you already had a DC so buthrecon is right you can only upgrade this server as it is already a member server.

Cheers

Ok lets recap, there is already a Win2k DC on the network. I would like to upgrade my member server to (additional DC) this is one of two options in DCPROMO the other being domain controller of a new domain which I do not want. It is at this point that it fails (see original post). So no active directory no promotion.

Cheers

OK,

Its usually DNS but check your dcpromo.log file which is in /winnt/debug - you should I think have this created at this stage.

Are you sure you are putting the correct domain name that you're trying to join - sorry might sound obvious but can get confusing sometimes.

You must be able to contact the original DC to upgrade can you nslookup the FQDN of the DC, ping the name etc ?

Hope this helps with some clue - I'm sure the log should spell it out though.

Cheers
