Unable to print to wireless printer connected to VPN

I use a VPN to connect to a network and utilize a software application. Without the VPN I can print to the wireless printer from the laptop. When attempting to print wirelessly out of the application after connecting the VPN it will not print. If I hardwire the printer to the laptop I can print from the application while on the VPN. Why would I not be able to print wirelessly when connected to the VPN?
