I am unable to print large documents on one of my okidata printers. After about 10 to 20 pages I start to get ghost characters appearing. It looks like maybe its loosing its handshake or something ? I believe there was a fix for this. I just can not remember what it is.

Any ideas
-Danny

for starters try xon-xoff on the oki and the serial port. Over time have become less enamored of other handshakes.
My ultimate solution would be to convert it to parallel and use a s/p converter with built in buffer. Put in a meg of memory and see if you ever overrun it.
Ed Fair
efair@atlnet.com

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.
Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.
This used to happen a lot to me, until I discovered the joys of Xon/Xoff :) Usually around page 14, or 12 if it was a dense print, things would start to go wrong.

As Ed says, set Xon/Xoff handshaking on the printer and you should be OK. If you still have problems you will need to amend the stty mode settings in the printer interface file so that they include ixon, ixoff and -ixany.

--
I seem to remember that you are using an intel network printing box for this (from your form feed problem). If that is still the case, try editing the /etc/printcap file, and adding a "mx#nnnn" to the end of the line referring to your network oki printer. nnnn is the number of blocks for the new maximum. The default is something like 1MB.

This means "maximum file size sendable" or some such. Note that fields entered into this file are delimited with ":" too.

This is on the "man printcap" help pages if my memory is faulty.

Fiona Williams
willif@mosspharmacy.co.uk

I would say you might also want to look at slowing down communication - had the same problem on an epson FX1150 and slowing down print jobs to 2400 and using xon-xoff was able to print larger jobs on a serial printer w/ limited memory

Thanks for all the help,

donthaveone,willif,AndyBo,edfair

I had to ameand the following stty settings in my interface script to to get xon/off working. Once I did that the printer worked great. It is no longer an isse.

ixon -ixany

My hat is off to all of you, Thanks again

-Danny
