After a system crash I am unable to print. Had previously printed via USB to the local printer. Now USB not showing as an available port when adding the printer (does show in Device Manager). Switched to a parallel cable, added the printer (HP880C). After the software rebooted the pc to complete the printer install it then tests the communication to the printer and results say that only 1-way communication is working. I tried a new parallel cable, uninstall and reinstall of printer software, same message. I CAN print locally from DOS but printing from Windows apps gets error writing to lpt1. Printing a test page also gets that error. Lastly, I CAN share the printer over our peer-to-peer network and print from other pcs to that printer from both DOS and Windows. ANY suggestions? Boot to safe mode.
Remove all printers in device manager, also remove your LPT1 in ports, and all USB devices.
Unhook the printer.
Restart, install LPT1, and USB support.
Hook up the printer to the parallel port.
Install the printer.
Unhook it, and try an install via USB. [sig]<p>Jim<br><a href=mailto:reboot@pcmech.com>reboot@pcmech.com</a><br><a href= & Sue's Free Files</a><br>Current moderator at Staff contributor/moderator at Windows 9x/ME instructor.<br>

Thanks Jim but I didn't get it working yet.
In Safe Mode Device Manager there were no printers listed, I removed the ECP Printer Port and the USB Devices (controller & hub).
Unhooked the printer and restarted the pc
Windows detected new hardware & installed the 3 devices I'd removed. Note - the port shows 'ECP Printer Port' but the name does not include LPT1.
I ran 'Add New Hardware', Windows didn't detect any. I added a Printer Port but it also didn't show as LPT1 and on reboot had yellow exclamation mark
I went ahead and hooked the usb cable to the printer and pc. Windows detected & installed the software for it. Device Manager again has the Printer listing.
Also, I ran the Add Printer wizard, selected Generic printer and in the ports available there are only Com Ports and Print to File. Did I miss something on adding the LPT1? [sig][/sig]

You'll probably have to change the printer's parralle port at CMOS level. A friend of mine had a similar problem with his Cannon. I had to eventually change the LPT communications to EPP for it to work.

Try it out and let us know if works or not. [sig]<p> <br><a href=mailto: > </a><br><a href= > </a><br>You can pick your friends and you can pick your teeth and you can pick your toes, just don't pick you nose.[/sig]

You should have the option in BIOS to select ECP/EPP and it will give you a DMA #. Don't change the DMA # just yet. See if that will install a printer.
Why did you select &quot;generic&quot; for a printer?
The generic drivers won't run any kind of inkjet at all, least of all an HP.
Just get the Port working, then run the HP installer on the CD that came with the printer. [sig]<p>Jim<br><a href=mailto:reboot@pcmech.com>reboot@pcmech.com</a><br><a href= & Sue's Free Files</a><br>Current moderator at Staff contributor/moderator at Windows 9x/ME instructor.<br>
