Unable to open word attachment in Outlook 98

A user in our domain has a unique problem in which users recieving word attachments from him get nothing but garbage ie over the internet. He uses outlook 98 and our server runs Exchange Server 5.5 with SP3. Sending attachments locally for him is fine.
As a short term fix he forwards the attachment to someone in his department who then forwards in on.
Am I missing something?

In what format is he sending his email, plain text ot HTML?

Have you tried deleting the .ost file and recreating the user's profile in Outlook?

Has he tried to drop the word version or sent in rich text and see if he still gets the same problem?
