This document has been sent to several other users who are all using Word 2003. They can all open it successfully. The error message when trying to open it under 2007 reads as follows:-

"You are attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy setting."

I followed the link to the Microsoft website and got to kb922849, and went through the instructions relating to Word 2007. However, the DWORD value is already set to 0.

I have had the document resent but it still cannot be opened. Other than ditching Word 2007 and going back to the 2003 version which I much prefer, has anyone any solutions to this problem?

have you updated 2007 to sp1 ?

try a reinstall of 2k7 on that pc

Thanks for reply theo1881. Micro$oft has obtusely place the "About Microsoft Word" function which would have told me version number and service pack (if any), in some hidden place, so frankly I've no idea if it's been updated to SP1 or not! This is just one of many backward steps that puts people right off Micro$oft products!

Perhaps you'd be kind enough to tell me where they've hidden away this basic piece of information...

Firstly, Office Button > Word Options > Resources tab > About is where they've hidden the version information.

As for the problem - if it's not a policy, perhaps you just have a non-policy setting for Word: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\etc.

Enjoy,
Tony

or it should be listed in add/remove programs if you view updates checked

Ok, thanks, found the version info. It was SP1. Another user just contacted me to say they'd had exactly the same issue, i.e. Word 2003 document wouldn't open in Word 2007. Here's the answer they got from Microsoft:-

Open regedit.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Office
12.0
Word
Security

Create new folder, FileOpenBlock
Create new Key DWORD value, FileBeforeVersion with value 0

That seems to work, and the file sent can now be opened.
