One of our users has a PST folder (stored on a non-exchange server) that is 1.69 GB in size. He was unable to open it yesterday and I ran the Repair Inbox Tool. After running the tool, it told me it found minor inconsistencies and I could "click here to repair", which I did and it froze while trying to repair. I restored his PST folder from the night before and we could open that fine. I tried running the repair tool again today on the larger file and still it wouldn't open. I know if it reaches 2 GB it won't open, but this isn't that size. Any ideas? Thanks.

The Repair Inbox tool is a lifesaver about 2% of the time on a file that large. You just run that kind of risk. Either by mail in the deleted box, or attachments in every mail for years, it ends up like this almost every time. That was your best bet, using the RIT. Did the old file open? If it did, delete all that crap in deleted and outbox first thing. Then, if there's a quota set up on the server for space and he's allowed more, start moving some of that stuff to a folder on the server side of Outlook and then start a new pst and drag the good stuff back in under a new profile. Copy the .pab as well when you build a new profile by deleting the old ones, (.pst and .pab)

When he opened the old one he started moving stuff into it and it got to 1.7GB - now that one won't open. I have tried restoring from Wed. Thurs and Fri of last week and they are not opening. I am now restoring from Tues. to see if we can open that. I don't understand if it is under 2gb why we can't open any of them. Once we can open one of them, I'm going to set up several pst files and he can have several smaller ones, but I have to get to one first. Arghh!

just go back to writing in stone with a chisle. Sometimes it's easier than fixing something from MS man. =)
