I'm sure I'm just missing something here.

I can only open one instance of Internet Explorer. Each time I open another instance, the previous one closes. Same thing happens if I right click and select open in new window. The original closes.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks...

Use the remarkable little utility by Ramesh MS-MVP called IEFIX: Be sure to checkmark any option selections.

Prior to do this, in IE click on Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and make sure the option 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts' is checkmarked as enabled.

Thanks, That looks like an awesome utility. I will get a lot of use out of it.

My solution was to clear the "Enable third-party browser extensions", and the problem disappeared. I was then able to add them back in one at a time until I found the culprit.

jferrante,

Sounds semi-good. If disabling third-party browser extensions resolves the issue, it sounds like you have a bum Browser Helper Object installed.

Please consider my notes in FAQ faq608-4650

bcastner,

Just a bit more info. Before my post, I ran cwshredder, Microsoft anti-spyware, and Spybot on this computer.

There were a lot of spyware problems, and all (most?) were corrected.

I then read thread 608-1023325, internet explorer opening then exiting! Which was also answered by You. That's what gave me the idea to go to clear the "enable third party browser extensions"

I also ran hijack this and manually removed the few items I recognized as malware. All seems fine now.

One last problem remains. The XP SP2 firewall service will not start. I have not taken the time to troubleshoot that problem yet. The user needed a new AV program, so I installed Norton Internet Security 2005. The Norton firewall is active and working, so the firewall problem became a non-issue for now. I will post the errors for the firewall in the appropriate forum to find out what the problem is.

Thanks twice for the great tips and a star for You!

Jeff

What does Event Viewer say about the non-starting Firewall issue?

If it is silent, I would watch out for the Bube.D malware issue, a brand new genuine p.i.a.

The Microsoft Anti-spyware with current definitions can clean this; AdAware and SpyBot do not recognize the issue at the moment.

I provide a link in forum760 for removal and identifaction of Bube.D and Bube.E (Look for a recent thread by me with Bube in the title).
