Unable to open eps files in Illustrator

I have a friend using Illustrator 9 for pc. She is unable to open files using her illustrator. I am completely baffled. When she does open them they are text.

Have they got the correct file extension? It might be something simple like adding a .eps or .ai to the filename.

Yeah, I checked on that too. My thinking that 'cause she's using a copy of the program that possibly some of the import filters got corrupt.

Are the EPS files created from Illustrator or some other program like Photoshop? I believe there are different 'flavours' of EPS according to the program used to create them. If they were created in Illustrator, were they created in a higher version of Illustrator (like V10?). Whoever is creating them could save them back to V9 then she might be able to open them.
