I have a Proliant 3000 with Netware 3.2 and have just added some extra disks. The server has found the disks and the array is configured correctly.

Unfortunately, while I was able to create a new volume when I try and mount it I get:

1.1.39 Cache memory allocator out of available memory

I've searched the web and others and the only mentions of this error concern with Register Memory. I already have 100Gb of volumes mounted, and the server has 1.1Gb of RAM, I don't think this is the issue!

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks

PS This exact problem has occured in another office in my company...

Hi,

I have had this also, can be for a number of reasons... Have you done the memory/disk space/files calculation ?

When volumes mount in Netware 3 they have to have a contiguous segment of memory, I did end up moving around some of the NLM's on startup and making sure volumes are mounted first before anything else is loaded.

SUPPORT.NOVELL.COM does has some real help for this problem.

Steve.

Have you increased ALLOC SHORT TERM MEMORY from the default 8Mb? If not give it a go.

Hi, Flatfour

I agree with Steve & Bluenose.

Have you checked where the memory is going in monitor?

If the new volume you have added is especially large, you may have to go to a large cluster size in order to reduce the FAT footprint. However that will kill you in wasted space if your volume has a lot of small files.

You can also do a purge all on existing volumes to reduce the amount of memory used to cache directories, at the expense of no longer being able to salvage deleted files.

Try bringing up the system with only SYS mounted and then check memory status. Mount the new volume manually and check memory again to see what happens. Then do the same with each of the other volumes to get an idea how much memory each one is taking.

Best regards
Jock

Thanks for the help folks, after a whole weekend in the office I now have an extra 100Gb mounted. In the end it was the register memory issue, I have seen in another post that NW3.2 should auto register fine, but not on Compaq Proliants. Something to bear in mind if anyone else wants to run over 100Gb volumes!
