This is my first post so please be gentle.

I have setup 2 virtual machines that are both running 2003 Server R2 SP2.

They are both part of the contoso.com domain and server01 is acting as a DC, DNS, and DHCP server and everything is working OK.

The problem i have is with server02 which is just a simple member server.

When i logon to server02 as administrator it wont allow me to make administrative changes, and when i look at the system properties by right-clicking my computer and selecting properties not all of the tabs are showing. Whenever i need to make and admin change such as add\remove programs or components i get a message saying access denied. I have to then do 'run as' and tell it to use the local administrator password.

I am guessing it is something to do with permissions or groups.........

Any ideas?

did you join the server02 to the domain.

Yes, Server02 has been joined to the domain - contoso.com

I suppose I should have eliminated these the first time too. So it shows up in Users and Computers.
Shows up in DNS.
And has a static IP address, with the same subnet mask.

You have indicated that it works when you right click and perform the task using RunAS. Is your account an actual administrator on the server?

Server01 has been assigned a static IP address but Server02 is using DHCP.

Server02 shows up in ADUC and DNS.

I am logging on using the built-in Administrator account.

I have now given server02 a static IP address but am still unable to make changes to the server.

Any Ideas?

Log on as the domain admin, not the local admin.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

davetoo, I assumed he would do that considering he knows how to create virtual machines and set up a domain. But then again assumption is the mother of all f*&%ups.
Check that the log on to. drop down list has the domainname and not this computer.

Yes, i am logging on as the domain admin using the built-in Administrator account and am definitly logging onto the domain (Contoso.com)

I have also created a new user account and added it to the domain admins group and logged on with this, however, i still have the same problem.
