I have been asked to look at a pc which was having some problems logging on.

When you switched it on it came up with a message (even in safe mode)

System error lsass.exe:
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.

I used a linux boot cd to change all the passwords back to blank and now I can get to the login screen but when I put in a blank password it tells me it is incorrect.

I have done a google search and Microsoft call it the out of the box experience which generally happens when you first switch on a new pc.

It says you need to reinstall windows.

Can I try a windows repair? If so will I lose any data? (don't think I do but would rather check).

I can get all the data of if need be by using my Knoppix boot cd and then doing a reinstall but I would rather not if I can help it.

Thanks

But you will lose hotfixes and Service Packs. Plan to spend some time aftewards at the Windows Update site.
