Hello all,

I don't get it, please help! I am a domain admin I have a member server and am a member of the local admins group on the box. I log on to the member server and create a map to a remote server (where I am a domain admin) and try to launch an executable - no luck, it's telling me "Windows cannot access the specified device"

Any ideas???

Thanks!

What are your file/folder permissions to this file, also are you sure its correctly mapping? Can you get anything else out of this drive? Is it mapped and just not connected? Are you remote, do you need a VPN connection to this machine?

Domain Users actually has full control to this folder and files including the exe. The mapping is correct, I can get to other stuff in the same directory. We're just going over the network, servers are within the local office, we're not using VPN.

Problem seems to be only with the running of the exe file.

Add the \\servername to the trusted security zone of IE on the server you're trying to run it on.

Can you launch any .exe's remotely?

As long as the remote site/server is in the trusted zone, yes.

I had the same thing with SP4 for SQL 2000 on a brand new build of 2003 Ent R2 server. However I copied the setup file from a UNC (hosted on my workstation)
After nearly an hour wasted in vain I re-downloaded the setup file from the MS site directly from the server. Worked fine then.

Very bizzare!

Does the application work when run locally on the server? You say you get a "Windows cannot access the specified device" message. Is it possible the configuration is looking for a specific drive assignment when you launch the app?

No I cannot launch any exe from the remote server. I'll have to continue to play with it. All the permissions are set correctly.

Right click on the file and click properties. On the General tab at the bottom is there a Security option with an 'Unblock' button? I have this with a W2K3 Domain Controller, however I don't have it with some other servers? I assume there must be some security settings regarding 'untrusted' files? If I click the 'Unblick' button the .exe runs. It does the same for .exe files copied from remote servers as well.

Open IE, go to Tools>Internet Options>Security>Trusted Sites>Sites> and add \\servername to the list.

This is by design.

I'm unable to run any .bat files cmd and .exe files. I look at the secure zone and it looks like its only for websites. I'm tring to exe this file from another remote server, not website.
